They called me to carry His cross
Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah.
Unwillingly I agreed as it was mounted across
My shoulders, on this lonely walk to Golgotha
I was indignant at first, a man of pride,
To be part of such shame and mockery.
But when I looked at Jesus who for their sins cried,
I saw a love oh so fatherly.
Why would the Son of God stoop so low, I wondered,
If His own people could not see His love?
This man who could calm the waves and thunder
Submitting meekly to the plan of God above.
So filled with compassion that He put us all first
Could we ever be deserving of His mercy?
As we walked to that mountain, His soul did thirst
To save us sinners, unworthy.
He stumbled and fell for He was frail and weak
But his calm determination stunned me.
This King was born, the lost to seek
Oh! His infinite love for you and me.
When we reached the hill, He took His cross back.
I watched, for I wanted to see,
This moment in history that made the heavens black -
The Son of man hanging from a tree.
I worshiped in awe as my knees hit the ground
I know I am redeemed.
Don't you see by His blood we are all found?
And by His stripes we are all healed.
This King who formed the heavens with a word
Wants a relationship with you and me.
He paid the price, it's us He preferred.
His love will set you free.
